Discussing the Qualys SSL Labs SSL Server Test Results

The Qualys SSL Labs SSL Server Test has come to acquire a status of its own, hence discussing the SSL server test results has its own relevance today.

Qualys SSL Labs: An Introduction

Qualys, Inc., spread across over 100 countries globally, is a leading provider of cloud-based security and compliance solutions. Qualys SSL Labs, one of the many notable projects of Qualys, Inc., is a research effort that ventures to develop a comprehensive and much better understanding of the SSL/TLS protocols and Web PKI.

In the words of Ivan Ristić, Director of Engineering at Qualys, “SSL Labs is a collection of documents, tools and thoughts related to SSL. It’s an attempt to better understand how SSL is deployed, and an attempt to make it better. I hope that, in time, SSL Labs will grow into a forum where SSL will be discussed and improved.”

Qualys SSL Labs provides the tools and the documentation that’s required for online assessment and configuration of SSL/TLS and Web PKI. Periodic surveys of SSL configuration and SSL pulse are also done by SSL Labs; there is also a monthly scan of about 70,000 most popular SSL-enabled websites.

Qualys SSL Labs SSL Server Test is done based on different criteria and is seen as one of the best SSL testing tools; it helps check for vulnerabilities and misconfigurations. The test analyzes all aspects, including the validity, the algorithm used to sign, the protocol details, cipher suites, handshake simulation etc. Then it provides detailed technical information, which would be of great help to system administrators, auditors, web security engineers in understanding and fixing weak parameters.

The SSL Server Test analyzing four leading SSL providers- Comodo, DigiCert, GlobalSign and GoDaddy- discusses the trust and validity of the SSL/CA and then also looks into Protocol Support, Key Exchange support and Cipher Strength.

Comodo Leads

Among the four SSL providers analyzed in the SSL Labs SSL Server Test, namely Comodo, DigiCert, GlobalSign and GoDaddy, it’s Comodo that leads, with an overall A+.

Comodo SSL has scored 100 overall for trust and validity and for protocol support, while for Key Exchange support and Cipher Strength, the score is 90 each. DigiCert meanwhile has scored 100 overall for trust and validity, while the score for protocol support is 95. In the other two areas, namely Key Exchange support and Cipher Strength. DigiCert has scored 90 each. GlobalSign and GoDaddy register the same scores as DigiCert.

The test results are of great relevance as it covers all the vital aspects relating to CAs and the SSL/TLS protocols.
